Bought a bed in a box from Dr. Evil Amazon. It’s been expanding for about a day now. How long before I can sleep on it? Do I really even have to wait? I remember hearing you have to let it expand all the way.
You have to sleep on it NOW or it will keep expanding and consume your town
Depends on what the goal is.
You can sleep in it whenever without hurting the mattress, it just won’t be as comfortable.
However, if you’re worried about offgassing, there’s differing opinions based on the exact materials, but the worst is going to be the first 24 hours or so. If you’ve got good enough ventilation, even that’s not a hard stop limit, but it’s not going to smell very pleasant for most people.
Smell wise, at least a day, with two being where most people don’t mind whatever chemical smell is left.
But it’ll be putting out lesser amounts up to about the 5 day mark where any materials in common use will be emitting as little as they ever will on a practical level.
I tend to favor the third day myself. The smell is tolerable to me by then, though I’ll likely be a little clogged up for the first night or two after that anyway.
So, it’s really up to you at this point, it’s as ready as it needs to be to give acceptable support.
How many times have you done this?
Ahhhh, lemme count while I type.
Five in my house, two at my mom’s, one at my best friend’s, and one at my sister in law’s.
So, 9 where I was the person making the decisions and handling the process. Plus a dozen or more beyond that where people just asked pretty much what this post did, and I answered them lol.
Alright, you’re qualified. It just sounded wild that you have a known preferred day for an item I’ve chosen once in my life. Twice? And I went with an air mattress this time so I’m not sure when I’ll actually need to replace it
Yeah, those air mattresses last very well.
I’m on my second memory foam, and thinking about a new one just because I want something a little thicker.
They’re great, but they don’t last as long as a good air mattress. Longer than a spring one though
I’d let it offgas for 24-72 hours at least. It smells awful. It’s probably something awful like VOCs, lol. Definitely keep a window open until it gets less stinky.
Yeah that was the worst part of my last mattress purchase, soo stinky
It should be expanded by now. You should be good to sleep on it.
It’ll be fine. Nothing at all to worry about. If it hasn’t already expanded to the maximum, which it likely has, it’ll crack on with it in the morning when you get up.
Did it come with instructions? We left ours for 24 hours and it was fine. YMMV
AFAIK it’s done when it reaches the final height and isn’t bent any more (assuming it came vacuum shrinked and rolled up)
Leave it outside for 3 days to let the plastic smell dissipate. It will be expanded by then too.
I know leaving your mattress outside sounds like crazy talk, but off-gassing is a thing, folks. Personally I would opt for leaving the windows open as much as possible over cleaning off bird poop.
And it will have spiders
Yeah thinking back, when we got one here we didn’t literally take it outside, we left it in a room with the door closed and the windows open, so the fumes didn’t get into the rest of the house much. It stopped smelling after a few days.
Living in a city that’s a little difficult haha
Now it’s fine. It’ll just expand to it’s set size once you get off of it anyway
You should wait a few hours before putting sheets on it, so it can off gas, and not smell like chemicals.
