No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I feel comfortable/safe going outside by myself after being so used to have parent(s) be with me outside most of my life?English
14·2 months agoThis is exactly my problem with BCs stupid laws. Kids can’t be without their parents until 11.
ELEVEN!
Christ. How do they ever learn independence when they spend all of the most crucial years of their development forcibly tied to the parents hip?
I was allowed to go to the corner store at five. By ten I was completely independent and mowing lawns as an afterschool job.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Been a long time since I smoked but if I opened the door to my fireplace and tossed in a kilo of pot and just let the smoke fill up the house will everyone in my house get high?English
41·2 months agoFireplaces have a flue. If you close it the smoke has no where to go but the house.
The whole idea still smacks of dumbfuckery, don’t get me wrong; but its not as much of a lost cause as you’re thinking.

ADHD@lemmy.world•Is it okay for a therapist to tell me to just accept this trait?English
7·3 months agoI lived for years without meds before COVID and wish I still could.
Not everyone can or should, however, should you be able to find a way to roll with it and use it while recognising your limits and when you need to change tasks etc, it can be much better to use tools than to use medication.
Medications like ADHD meds are not a type of medication that builds up and maintains a status quo of effect. They burn out and they must, because most of them are methamphetamine based and would keep you up all night.
So, like pain meds, ADHD meds have a pendulum effect. Whatever ADHD focus is without them is a baseline; the pendulum is at rest. When you take them, your focus improves greatly which makes all the other symptoms easier, and now your relative baseline from your perspective has shifted. You want normal to feel like that all the time, and by comparison, your natural baseline is much much worse.
But then the meds wear off, and you take dive in the evening. Rather than returning to your normal baseline, you go more off the rails as your perspective has shifted, which increases the overwhelming nature of your baseline, and its like the pendulum swings past the resting point into a level of disorder you’ve never felt.
As someone who struggles with weight due to ADHD hyperfocus combined with late night cravings, this is a death knell to self control and weight control; however as mentioned without the meds post-covid, I cannot focus at my job. So they are absolutely necessary now.
Its better to not deal with a swinging pendulum, but sometimes its better to get yourself into a better place.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you are planning your life around putting money into assets tied to the imperial core e.g. housing and retirement how do you feel abt the entire financial system being a giant bubbleEnglish
1·4 months agoI mean, in the case of changing values of currency, physical money isn’t changing anything there. As a Canadian forced to buy many things in USD I am constantly suffering from exchange rate changes which is similar. Money retains the same value in country though unless something goes really wrong at the bank of Canada. This is riskier because of trade and how interdependent nations are today.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you are planning your life around putting money into assets tied to the imperial core e.g. housing and retirement how do you feel abt the entire financial system being a giant bubbleEnglish
1·4 months agoI’m not a financial expert here, so some of the things you hit on in your reply I am not familiar with. I’ve never used GICs. RRSPs however can be invested, or sit in cash non-invested. Its the same account type either way.
Some, like BMO Investorline, will charge for it to sit in cash (Investorline charges you $100/month) - BMO Smartfolio won’t let you put things in cash, they say they aren’t setup for that.
I ended up moving my RRSP to an RRSP with my credit union. Its getting moved to an RRSP but it will sit in cash hold, uninvested, until such time as I am ready to put it back into the market. I did this before the 2020 dip as well. You can avoid the bubble popping this way. It doesn’t need to stay on the market.

7·4 months agoIn Canada at least you can have the funds pulled from the market and put in cash hold until you are comfortable with the market for RRSP/RESP.
Some banks will try to tell you you cannot do this or will charge you $100/month to keep it in cash. If they do, go to another institution and get it moved there. Many credit unions offer the same accounts with zero charges for holding cash.
I mean, to be fair these guys are paid the lowest dollar and subcontracted at this point. They literally aren’t paid enough to make ends meet, they are too distracted worrying about their lives and family to bother worrying about some poor design that involved having movable panels crossing a pattern forcing an unnecessarily specific alignment.

Pi4 is better for anything with video as it has a a hardware decoder. They dropped the hardware decoder in the Pi5 and I think you need to buy an extra module to have one for them.
