It’s not about absolutes. Speeding laws don’t stop speeders, obviously. But we still have them and many people drive slower with the threat that they may have to pay a ticket or might lose their license.

Also there is a real world that exists outside the internet and people and corporations can be coerced by the government if it wills it.

Not stopping the government all over the world from putting age gates on the internet.

Hate speech is also information. Also all information on the internet is tracked anyways. Even Al Capone was arrested for tax fraud.

Tech companies still have to pay taxes, meet health and safety standards, have vacation pay etc

Last time I checked guns, cigarettes, alcohol and cars still exist.

Yet you get penalised if you are caught driving drunk. You aren’t allowed to drive unless you are over 16 and pass a test. We don’t advertise cigarettes or sell them to kids and you can’t smoke in hospitals.

Do you really need to ask the question why people that are being opressed are concerned about their oppressors gaining more powerful tools of oppression?
