Steam Link wont work on a Rift S though.
So the only real other option would be to go the Linux route with Envision/Monado. But from what i gathered WMR/Rift S support can still be a bit iffy here and there.

If you want to have kind of a similar experience right now there is wayvr btw:

I’m amazed that you still cant get in your head that “bypass charging” as in the (probably) technically correct definition and “bypass charging” as in the colloquially used definition are both just coexisting things.
You explained how batteries and charging works really well in your post. But you didnt really educate me because i already knew that. I just hoped that valve implements the more advanced softwarebased batterymanagement to FURTHER improve batteryhealth when the headset is constantly plugged in. EG to have option to keep the battery at 60% or to have the option to MANUALLY tell the device to bypass. But that seems to be still to complicated for a seemingly otherwise intelligent person.
edit: Just to make another point. I even googled “bypass charging” before i made my original post just to be sure i use the correct term. i clicked through 3 articles which all used bypass charging pretty much the way i meant it. So idk man.

NGL,
this is a masterpiece of a post. Bravo. Perfect energy.
Still i think you are way to focused on the semantics. English certainly isnt my first language and with that i dont have any authority to judge how bypass charging is exactly defined. But that androidauthority article and many others pretty much use it to describe either a more intelligent battery management to improve battery health in the long term or/and to bypass the battery to directly power the hardware for heatmanagement. Samsung does the latter for its gaming mode on certain smartphones.
So your post is correct. But is still besides the point.
I absolutly take the blame for not beeing specific enough in my original post. But i feel like it was kinda implied that i meant the charge bypass which improves battery health in the long run edit: when the device is constantly or very often plugged in(which can be bad in the long run when the lion cells are constantly at 100%(i know its not really 100%)).

Uuuuuh, buddy…
Getting so worked up over semantics of bypass charging isnt a good look fou you.
Especially if you automatically treat people like they’re soo much dumber than yourself.
Nothing wrong with sharing some knowledge and while doing that correcting people if they’re wrong.
But i even looked up power management integrated circuits and battery managment systems. Idk but those arent even usb-pd or bypass charging specific things. Idk whats your point with that? Like that they exist and a 2026 high tech device will have them so the battery doesnt explode? Like, no shit?
Happy to see some sources that bypass charging is basically a requirement with USB-PD.
PS Fuck You

“finally update a device to support it” are… are you seriously that dumb to think that a SOFTWARE update somehow “enables” a physical function?

dickhead

Ney,
bypass charging isnt even nearly as widespread as you make it out to be. There are news articles written when a big phone manufacturer finally updates a device to support it. IMHO usb-pd is the same mess like with everything when it comes to usb standardization.
Pico 4 batteries are in the back like with the frame. Sure charging also causes heat. But i doubt my pico batteries degraded because of their charging management beeing so bad that it causes heat death. thats just ridiculous.

Impressive stuff on a technical level. But also confirms why i was so skeptical before the official announcement in regards to the then rumored standalone aspect. Quest 2/Pico 4 level internal resolution on a game which looks much worse than those old standalone headsets can deliver. While consuming 20(!) watts. Like sure its the early days. But the actual game performance for a probably 300% faster gpu in that SD8G3 compared to the SD865/XR2 is rough.
I followed quite closely whats possible with Winlator(XR) on Quest3 and Pico4 Ultra and it just didnt add up even with some Valve software magic and a bit better SOC sprinkled in.
There surely is a reason why they try to market it as wireless PCVR solution first and only showed off Hades2 on standalone in those hands ons.
Like dont get me wrong: Its still super impressive. But i’m pretty sure there will be atleast a minor shitstorm from people who didnt manage their expectations properly when it comes to PCVR running on standalone.

I hope the frame supports bypass charging. Like i’m certain i fried those batteries fairly bad already in my Pico 4 in less than two years because i use it so much plugged in. Two hours for one charge is just too damn short.

I expected more with that headline. idk what tbh.
Now Quest users dont have to sideload an apk i guess. cool.

Weird. There are like literal toys for 10% of the price which are more comfortable AND can effectivly do more things.

It was a pretty rough year for good VR releases IMHO. All the stuff that came to my mind were actually released last year.
The Crysis VR mod went 1.0 this year and is pretty good. Technically cant be nominated for the steam awards though.
On Quest the biggest Release is probably that new Deadpool game? Maybe i check out the unofficial Pico port. But i’m too burned out by superhero media tbh.
I scrolled through all the VR games released on steam this year and these games stand out to me atleast:
So in hindsight my first sentence in this post isnt entirely true. Not great, not terrible.

Most emulators for android work perfectly atleast if you have a regular bluetooth controller. On my Pico i cant map the motion controllers in android apps but the Xbox controller connects and works just fine.
good resource: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Emulators_on_Android
Theres also WinlatorXR for Windwos games. But its just too much of a hassle to setup everything for my taste. But it does work. I think just recently the fork Winlatorxr-Cmod got released which can be beneficial in certain aspects. But idk the XR2 Gen1 in my Pico4 is too slow either way for the interesting games to emulate.
You could also check out this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@virtuallyreal
A bit Pico centric but most stuff should be easily applicable on the quests with a few adjustments too.
I’m mostly using Ironfox and Fennec to have two seperate Firefox based browsers. One for watching videos while i browse on the other. Tubular for Youtube is also pretty good since the youtube webpage is soo fucking heavy that the fan gets annoyingly loud.
Duckstation with retroachievements for PS1 emulation is my jam when it comes to emulation. PPSSPP is also pretty sweet but it just doesnt scratch my itch like PS1 games do. idk

My guess(!): Big topics are already crowded by big channels which get an algorithmic boost because of their past success. Its harder to get your slop prominently shown and establish your content slop farm with these topics. While with niche topics its easier to get your video to the top of the search results.
There are opensource tools like https://n8n.io/ to automate the creation of slop content. From what i heard its piss easy to setup. Like here is a half an hour tutorial to set you up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u54cy2nQig
Then you shit out the slop content and hope your channel picks up. If it fails to drive numbers you abandon it and start with the next channel with the next topic variation. If you get lucky and the algorithm blesses you, you continue to shit out hundreds of videos.
As seen eg in the video of redlyne about the dead internet theory. Where he looks a bit into the slop channels on youtube and other stuff:

But YT definetly fucks something up when stable volume is enabled. My non audiophile ass can notice it instantly even with podcasts. It sounds significantly worse.

Sadly doesnt seem to work right now with my Pico 4 in combination with CachyOS. Steamlink just doesnt want to establish a connection to my PC. I can stream a super laggy virtual pancake stream. But VR mode wont even connect at all.
WiVRn and ALVR work flawlessly though. So i’m not too sad about it.
I looked through the Horizon+ offerings and these games stand out to me:
But it obviously depends on your tastes. I’m not the biggest fan of eg RPGs, life sims, survival crafters, etc. I would just look through the horizon+ catalouge and just pick and choose what looks the most interesting to you. Its not too long of a list and contains very little garbage titles.
Oh, and dont forget to check out:

Especially the Team Beef Ports of older PC titles are pretty damn good. Just be sure you trained your VR legs a bit before. Also you have to obtain the files for the games itself from your steam account or by other means…
