it’s established terminology. I’m sure you have feelings about the term, but I’m not really invested in them either way.

I’m not sure what you are referring to

Thanks for the surprise J-Law early in the morning! I’m a big fan.
Many countries have first-past-the-post elections, and there usually we don’t see the mortal lock of the two major party like we see in the U.S.
In the UK for example there are regional parties (SNP, DUP, etc) and lib Dems/greens that win seats and send people to Westminster.
The main problem as far as I can see is that campaigning in the US is very expensive, and third parties have problems raising the cash needed to make a dent in elections for Congress, let alone statewide office.
To frame it in economic terms, it’s a market with a high barrier to entry that has evolved a duopoly. In that aspect it’s not too dissimilar to cable companies etc.
TLDR: Fuck citizens united

46·2 years agoI got up to judo brown belt as a teen and it has saved my ass countless times. Not in fights, but in silly ass falls. Having good instincts when falling is a lifesaver.

Karate is Japanese, mr Sensei sir.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is martial arts really that useful?
111·2 years agoIt’s a sport. It’s not meaningfully more useful than other sports.
If you want something that’s genuinely useful in a confrontation, give up the fantasy of beating people up. Every time you fight you run a very real risk of incurring permanent harm or worse. Instead, sign up for track and learn and practice how to run away really fast.
TLDR: fighting not good. Not fighting, good.

Oh yeah. That’s great advice. That never goes wrong!
Oh wait. It’s not.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•When and why did democrats begin supporting fracking?
25·2 years agoThe argument given back in the day was “energy independence”.
The options (simply put) were 1) give money to shady middle eastern dictators 2) drill in ANWAR or 3) innovate in domestic production (fracking).
Renewables were still not up to par and nuclear was not seriously considered because the carbon thing was still an afterthought.
I’m not condoning this shit, I’m just explaining the state of play as I remember it.
Edgelord was the wrong word choice, sorry. I mean argumentative jerks that pick fights over absolutely anything.
Don’t sleep on the actual edgelords either. I got a guy in my replies right now screeching how women in politics are the real fascism because of identity politics.
But the jerks are the real issue.
Only up to a certain extent. The point of federation is that the shit gets spread around the instances.
Also, we have evolved “free speech” kind of ethos that only allows the most egregious of norm violations to be moderated.
This is place is forever lost to the edgelords.
We’re a bunch of assholes in a more or less unmoderated space. Of course discussion sucks.
This sounds like the kind of thing people say who can’t help themselves.
Like resolutions about never drinking again. Or how you really stopped smoking this time, pinky swear. Or how you’re definitely going to lose twenty pounds this year and hit the gym twice a week.

You start to wonder whether it’s an elaborate play to keep dx numbers down.
Be that as it may, your ad hoc definition in your first comment was spurious and finds no basis in English language Marxist literature.
That is the most pompous way to say “I have never heard of political science”.
This is the most pompous way to say “I am unaware that lots of countries on this planet have district based systems”.
