Oh, yes. Looking for words that mean the same thing backwards and forward but have different forms.
That’s probably a bigger ask with a phonetic alphabet. I think if a word consists of a combination of two symbols, the order of the symbols is much less important than that they are both present, but I haven’t studied those languages.

It’s called a palindrome in english and it is quite a well indexed phenomenon.

Man, if I had that kind of fucked-up enmeshment at work, I’d be looking for another job.

submission indication and for leisure/pleasure, sometimes both,
They really are just like people, aren’t they?

My cat misses me getting high.

You got cut off there, unfortunately.
I’ve been thinking of Türkiye lately because it seem like they want to get into the EU, but the EU apparently is still about Christianity because Canada’s getting in first… Turkey’s kind of in an odd position, in between world; kinda similar to Australia, realizing it’s actually part of Asia, or Swampthing, realizing he is not longer Alec Holland.
Thanks for those audio links; sounds really interesting.

Yeah, and we also adopted continental for mainland European, which makes very little sense, though I guess that’s more the inheritance of language.

Ah, that was avery insightful video. Thanks:

Yeah, there’s people who post the same general question in different words across multiple forums… it’s good to know when its the same user.

Greater Macedonia?

That was an enjoyable and elucidating read! Thank you!

Where would this sub be without pedantry?
I like your answer the best–call it what people there want to be called.
But your solution raises a problem if there’s a disagreement in that region. Turkey can decide to call itself Türkiye, but a region with separate countries might have a disagreement on what to call their shared region. I bet Turkey would love to be in the region called, “The Former Ottoman Empire”, but Greece might not care for it.

Who else advocates for “West Asia”? Is it just Iran?
There was a really insane dude I ran into somewhere on the internet that would just always talk about how great Persia was and was always bringing up the Persian Empire and talking about how Persian armies defeated Rome or Greece (aka The West) in this or that battle–totally out of context–so I know what you’re talking about.
Oh, and the Iranian guy who uses “West Asia”, also refers to “The West,” meaning Europe and the US, so I guess everyone falls into geographical relativitity eventually.

Generally, I like colloquial terms to stay colloquial and scientific terms to stay scientific. I am not going to correct someone for calling a mountain goat a goat–looks like a goat, acts like a goat, close enough, but don’t say it’s in Capra.
For me, I’m perfectly happy defining landmasses by conjoined areas on a map, with the only real sticking point being how small a landmass is small enough to discount as conjoining (North and South America). That’s based on objective physical fact; how those facts are interpreted would be a matter of consensus, of course, but the problem set is much more simplified.
This is kind of related to the whole Pluto debate. “Planet” is a word that has popular meaning, but we all kind of agree that astronomy gets to be the ultimate arbiter. “Continent” has no such committee.

Meh. More like I don’t think I’m supposed to be calling it the Middle East without seeming like an imperialist and I don’t want to call it West Asia because I don’t like Europe being a continent, so I’m kinda stuck.
I’m also wondering how people interpret “Middle East”, because I’m sensitive to that shit, especially on a global website. Like I don’t want to be calling placed “third world” if that’s offensive to people in the developing world / global south / ???.
“Middle East” is what I’ve always known the region as, and it’s just a historical-cultural accident that, in my defense, makes just as much sense as separating Europe from Asia. So either we keep both ME and Europe, or we get rid of both, is my logic.
So do I have agenda? Sort of. But also just wondering what people’s thoughts are on the subject.
One of my recent posts here was, “What’s a very specific opinion you have phrased as a question?” in homage to that evergreen and annoying problem of push polling on question forums.

Yes, but if we’re going to avoid cultural designations, we’d also have to avoid granting Europe continent status and calling the ME “West Asia” implicitly does that.
What was the logic in throwing North Africa in there?

The definition of a continent is geological. Geology is a science. By all rights, Europe is part of the Asian landmass. And that should be the end of the story. Culture and history shouldn’t play a part.
It would be like if biologists said, “We know dogs aren’t really human, but we love them so much we’re going to classify them as Homo fidelis anyway.”
It doesn’t make any sense.

Enough to kill you, otherwise I don’t think its going to have much of an effect on your nicotine addiction.
Yeah, but as an aesthetic definition, millenial is more a correlational than ontological. Most hipsters would be millenial, but they all don’t have to be. Put a boomer in skinny jeans, oil their beard, and put a craft heifeweisen in their hand and you’ll have a hipster.
