No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do some fruit produce human compatible hormones?
8·2 months agoAnother fun thing about Melatonin is also that nocturnal animals produce it basically the same way - dim light makes them produce melatonin while bright light flushes the melatonin out of their system. The melatonin itself just affects their nervous system in the opposite way and acts like a stimulant, so they get less sleepy when they have a lot of it. I think that’s kinda neat and maybe a bit counterintuitive if you have never thought about it before. I sure know that I would have either expected nocturnal animals to have their own separate compound or to produce melatonin at daytime.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it every aspiring chef's dream to work in a hectic high-stress kitchen? If so, why?
3·2 months agoYeah, for many people they do that! But if your brain is in absolute overdrive by nature it’s actually a performance boost to slow it down to a point where you have proper control over it.

17·2 months agoI don’t work in the food industry, but I do have the flavor of ADHD that would absolutely LOVE the work environment. There really is a special kind of zen you achieve when everything is on fire and you have to think on your feet all day. Plus the working times are fucked up and your diet consists of cigarettes, energy drinks and coke. That might not sound like an upside but if your life already is like that it really must be quite nice to have a job that conforms to it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the thing you're supposed to be doing right now instead of scrolling?
2·3 months agoNothing, I have the day (and all other Wednesdays until October) off so I’m just hanging out on my couch at 8am instead of working. It’s nice. Might go play some games later

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever found yourself in a personal situation that felt like it contradicted your political beliefs?
11·3 months agoYea, working in tech be like that sometimes. I quit my current job because I hate the AI push (especially the part about paying Antropic 250€ per month per employee) and because I think relying on AWS for critical European infrastructure is a really stupid idea.
The new job I’m starting in October isn’t much better though. It’s with a company that I would personally never ever enter a customer relationship with. It’s still reliant on AWS, but at least it’s not critical infrastructure. An AWS outage would only cost the company, not the customer. And the AI push in the new company is much milder because the teams there are highly skilled 3-5 senior engineer teams that don’t tolerate being told what tools to use.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How many sexual partners have you had?
5·4 months agoJust one 🤷 I’ve always been picky, so anyone who’d get that far would be someone I could see working out long-term. We’re in our 7th year together now.

4·6 months agoNah, it’s mostly fine, even though I don’t eat any. I’m super bothered by anything that’s fish or seafood though, cooking anything like that kills my appetite for as long as there’s still any detectable smell in the kitchen

4·6 months agoGreat tip, thanks! I’ll take a look at it since I definitely would prefer it if apps didn’t just talk to Google without asking me first. Kinda crazy how hard it is to even know about all the cracks that Google creeps in through 🥲

homeassistant@lemmy.world•Very dumb question about app notificationsEnglish
5·6 months agoI don’t think so! At least I don’t know what a Nabu Casa is, and I have no recollection of ever setting up any VPN or tunneling shenanigans in my home network. I know there’s services like Tailscale or that one everyone uses to play Minecraft together (Hamachi?) but they weren’t something that I felt like fiddling with yet. I only moved into that apartment like 2-3 months ago, so all the network stuff is pretty recent, I think I would have remembered it if I set up some VPN thing haha

homeassistant@lemmy.world•Very dumb question about app notificationsEnglish
6·6 months agoOh, that makes things even more mysterious! I’m running GrapheneOS and while this Profile does have Google Services installed, they’re still pretty restricted. I would have thought that they’d need some sort of notification-related privilege to relay those notifications to me :0

Outertune, Harmony, etc. kept dying on me too, so I pulled the nuclear option and set up a Jellyfin server for my music. yt-dlp can download whole playlists, so I had it pull the 250-ish songs I regularly listen to from youtube. I use FinAmp as the music app on my phone now, it’s set to automatically download the songs I add to my Jellyfin.
Only thing I haven’t figured out yet is how to find out about new music, but at least I’m now always guaranteed to have something that works.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Women of lemmy, what would you think of a job where you basically train men how to act?
1·7 months agoWould you see someone who is paid to interact with you as an equal though?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Women of lemmy, what would you think of a job where you basically train men how to act?
3·7 months agoSo that leads us into the actual question: would you be willing to take a job where you pretty much just train men on how to act around/ treat women?
Nope, hard pass. Never been into the social field myself, because it’s full of bullshit jobs. What would make this one any different than any of those “Life coach” jobs that promise to teach you all the secrets that will instantly fix you, as long as you have the money to keep paying for that “wisdom”?
Reality is, there is no single proven way to treat women. And if anyone claims that there is and they know it, it’s a scam.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some newsletters that you love seeing in your inbox?
1·7 months agoIt’s oddly specific, but vegpool.de has a weekly newsletter that lists all the vegan foods on sale in german supermarkets for the week. It’s usually only a few interesting items per store, so getting it compiled like that is super handy
I think Valve is one of the only companies I don’t actively hate. Steam is a pretty solid platform that hasn’t been too enshittified over the years, even though the gambling on there is kinda concerning.
The advances in Proton are usually attributed to them. And I like how permissive the family sharing on there is (I personally only own like 2 games and just leech the rest from my husband). But of course, they might just have a good PR team and be secretly shitty. I’m always down to just hop back to pirating games.
Oh, in that context, Humble Bundle seems pretty decent as well. That’s where my husband got most of his steam games from
Most of us speak pretty good English and German media absolutely sucks ass, so many people choose to exclusively hang out in English-speaking spheres i guess

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How/why does Microsoft teams exist?
30·9 months agoThe upside to Teams is that you can always claim it’s at fault for your fuckup. It has so many bugs that no one can ever say that something can’t go wrong because of teams.
- Fell asleep at your desk and didn’t see an important message or call? => “Dang, so sorry, Teams never sent me a notification!”
- Way too late to a scheduled meeting => “Omg hi, finally! Teams crashed every time I tried to enter the meeting!”
- Hungover and don’t want to turn on the camera => “I’m sorry, Teams starts stuttering every time I turn on the camera, so I’m keeping it off for now.”
- Forgot to get back to someone? => “Huh but I wrote you like a week ago… weird, Teams must have swallowed the message”
- Don’t want to answer a tough question in a meeting? => “Sorry, your audio keeps cutting out for me. Just one moment, let me restart Teams.” pretend to struggle for 20mins and give up without answering the question
