  • The point is old money is not showy compared to new money. New money is Lamborghinis, modernist mcmansions and private jets. Old money is low key, they don’t want to get clocked as being rich. Maybe they drive an old mercedes or wear ordinary clothes, but their friends know they have a controlling interest in a huge corporation, their own private island, etc. So sure, ordinary people can replicate much of the ‘aesthetic’, because its about rich people not wanting to seem rich.

  • I think its interesting that multiple instances feel they need their own “music@my-instance” community. One might expect that the instance doesn’t really matter, and each instance is just a gateway to the larger federated collection of communities.

But that’s not really the case - individual instances do have their own flavor to some extent. Moderation policy can be different, instances can avow some kind of purpose, like hexbear.net for instance is explicitly “leftist”. Other servers have different priorities.

In that context, it makes more sense to have duplicate communities - for instance if you post a youtube link on on music@hexbear.net you get an annoying warning about youtube. That fits with their leftist perspective. And its likely you’d get a different response from posting leftist music there than posting it on some right wing instance.

  • I’m afraid I’m still on reddit quite a bit. Most communities have a lot more activity there. Rust, nixos, luthiery, local and state level subreddits. r/fiddle, and other instrument subreddits have more activity.

That said theres a lot of chaff that I wouldn’t miss. r/sysadmins is all removed about corporate work, r/machinists the same but blue collar. r/hiking is all shoe posts and gear. Political subreddits have lots of activity but its 90% rage farming.

Technical communities are strong on lemmy, despite their smaller size. And its refreshing to read the super far left diatribes, I don’t get that stuff elsewhere.
