Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•There's a narrative that everyone now is stressed/busy/anxious – do you find this relatable?English
1·4 days agoyes, that makes sense.
class consciousness is almost a taboo subject within the anglosphere – despite there being a very large and easily accessible body of work that explains it as well as a roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the world practicing some aspect of it in every day life already.
i’m a neophyte to it myself and high profile examples of other neophytes like graham platner and kat abughazaleh make it clear how much damage you can do trying to practice it without a full understanding it. so any attempts on my part to explain it here should fall woefully short of achieving the goal of helping you understand how the lack of class consciousness is making people in the western world feel stressed/overwhelmed without realizing WHY they’re stressed/overwhelmed.
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml has created introductory reading lists and i strongly recommend starting there by going through their post history if you truly want to understand it.

7·5 days agoanalyses like these make it clear to me that class consciousness is gonna appear in the anglosphere long after it appears everywhere else, because it gets so close to the mark but never quite reaches it.
you’re 100% right that there’s a disconnect between how people feel about their current situation and how much they’re struggling with stress or feeling overwhelmed. the popular narratives in the west – especially the united states – leave people unable to see the relationship between global economic and geopolitical movements and the impacts they have on their own lives. instead, these manufactured narratives lead them to believe their failed coping efforts are just an unavoidable feature of modern life, as you described it.
for the moment, i’m like you – my life isn’t that stressful, but that’s because i’ve intentionally made it as non-stressful as possible through trial & error, and i know things will change again for me, like they have before. my life as an autistic & queer poc who descends from the kind of immigrants ice is currently rounding up has forced me to experience, witness, and acknowledge the casual fascism that’s intrinsic to western cultures in ways that non-stressed, non-overwhelmed americans never will – that is, until capitalism gets late stage enough to force it on them.
and even under such a reality, i fully expect the anglosphere to continue resisting to accept reality for an absurdly long time. you need to look at the responses you’re getting regarding health to a small taste of this; none acknowledge how much additional stress that affording healthcare while affording life at the same time is adding to their woes.
he’s one of those fabled good apples in the bunch – one of the cops who report the other cops – and the rotten ones in the bunch (aka the 99.99%) are trying to arrest him.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is anyone else scared of how fast AI is advancing?English
32·26 days agoIf you do something like software engineering and you have a significant body of existing good work for it to pull from. Claude can be pretty exceptional.
the fresh grad new hires at my last place were able to code circles around me because of their embrace of ai and it made me think that i was already a dinosaur and became the biggest reason why i went back into IT.
It’s not great at breaking new ground though.
but watching the soon-to-be grads w a similar embrace fall flat on their faces repeatedly because the codebase at my new place hasn’t been updated in almost 15 years and was created by their fellow students, has made me realize that this is also true.
still though, if you know what you’re doing; ai is a pretty decent idea/concept generator and sounding board if all but one of your colleagues are students, so you don’t have anyone else to ask like it is in my present situation.
