You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: The US massacred hundreds & raped children as young as 12 in one day. Only one perpetrator was convicted and only received three years of house arrest

If missing the point was an art, you’d be Michelangelo.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Joseph Stalin created the Great Terror. He started killing people randomly including artists, generals, doctors, scientists, government officials. Everyone was terrified.
213·29 days agoLamenting the fall of the Soviet Union isn’t the same as thinking Stalin was good. There were several people after Stalin who didn’t randomly disappear people. At least, not as much.
That said, post WWII through the fall of the USSR I’d bet the average Soviet citizen had a better standard of living than the average Russian does today.

1657·29 days agoAll my life I’ve seen Stalin listed with people like Hitler and Pol Pot as murderous despots. How the hell are we “not talking enough about how bad he was?”

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The City of Encinitas, California is removing a protected bike lane to replace it with a painted bike lane. Cost? $3 million. The mayor says it's a great idea. English
8·1 month agoNot knowing your city I can’t speak to that, but I’ve been both a cyclist and a pedestrian in those circumstances and it fucking sucks. People tend to spread out when they walk, and cyclists are typically moving fast enough that walkers are effectively stationary in comparison. So walking becomes a frustrating exercise in dodging bikes, and cycling becomes a frustrating exercise in avoiding clumps of people (along with whatever other crap is placed on the sidewalk without considering cyclists.)

35·2 months agoI would argue that while nudity at home should not be an issue, the nature of the film industry means that even if the nudity is presented in a naturalistic fashion, the fact it is on film makes it exploitative.
Imagine being 10-12 years old, naked, and surrounded by adults (mostly men,) some of whom are more or less ordering you around. I can’t imagine a way to make that anything other than deeply distressing for a child.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are there so many Christmas songs, yet hardly any New Year's ones?
1·4 months agoNope, it was written for a minstrel show, to mock black folks. The songwriter later moved south to join the confederacy.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Trying to find a messenger bag at AmazonEnglish
3·4 months agoI have seen some sellers figure out workarounds. If you have a different SKU, it doesn’t get considered. So for example, Poppi soda sells a 12 can variety pack on Amazon. They sell a 15 can variety pack for the same price at Costco. Different SKU, lower price per unit.

I think it would be both normal and probably welcomed by a lot of them (as long as you’re not pushing an MLM.) Worst case scenario, they decline your friend request, but it’s not “weird.”
Well, I have kids so getting them gifts, and a nice dinner with them and their mom (she and I are still friends and good co-parents, just not good spouses to each other.)
I mean, that looks like an air traffic control tower, so there may very well be people in there. Just not “tenants” in the strictest sense.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why did Thanos, with the power of all the infinity stones, never think to try doubling the amount of resources in the world?
3·6 months agoThat’s in the comics. We’re talking about the movies, where the personification of death is not a factor.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why did Thanos, with the power of all the infinity stones, never think to try doubling the amount of resources in the world?
285·6 months agoBecause it’s a pretty dumb story at its core. Because they wanted the “worst villain” but couldn’t come up with something more interesting or intelligent than “misguided environmental terrorist.”

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•When a person gains weight and keeps the weight on for a long time, is that old fat in your body, or does the fat get replaced over time?
7·6 months agoAnd of course health insurance wouldn’t cover it because it’s “elective”.

22·6 months agoSeems like that would be an argument for liposuction as a way to supplement other weight loss because it would remove those cells.
