Ok so, you’re vague on what the apocalypse is, but you did say “before everything collapses”, and talk about preserving knowledge. So I’m thinking big solar flare that destroys technology as we know it.

For an apocalypse, this is easy mode. Basically going back to like what, the 50s level of tech for most people. A lot of the world would also not even notice.

Get myself and all the people I care about to withdraw everything they can in cash, even taking out cash loans if possible. Build fereday (sp?) cages for all our stuff. Stock up on a few months worth of groceries and water, and we could probably ride that wave till things get fixed.

It certainly can seem like that, but the biggest problem is our voting system makes it work like that.

With a winner takes all voting system, and only two effective parties in power, everyone is basically stuck with “horrible monster who wants to kill everything in know and love” and “someone close to what I want kinda”.

So people tend to vote among party lines because that’s all they can do.

For example, where I live, both candidates have been anti trans. One’s way worse about it and the other is, in my opinion, probably just saying some rhetoric to try to appeal to some voting base she normally can’t reach. So I am going to have to choose the lesser of two evils, because the person running against her is from a party that actively wants to exterminate trans people, even though the other candidate sucks.

In short, Americans don’t vote for, they vote against.

An army recruiter came to my extremely poor elementary school, and could basically say anything to us kids. Told us that if we joined the army you can get whatever food you want, at all, from the mess hall and a chef will cook it for you. And yes, being able to get food was a motivating factor for some of us.

I asked if you could get eggs Benedict every day if you asked for it. He looked a little nonplused, then said “oh yeah sure! Every day!”

I knew at that point he was full of it and told him so.

Everyone in the US thinks the state they are from is both the best and the worst at the same time. And also gets mad if you agree that their state is the worst of you’re not from there.

That being said, Ohio is aight, more interesting than people give it credit for, and everything bad people think about Ohio is way more true in Indiana.

Also no one talks about how freaking beautiful West Virginia is I swear.

Nope, but also, it can be if that’s the mood you’re in.

For me it feels more like that part of the roller coaster when you just start to drop and you’re in that free fall state, but for about 12 hours or so. It’s a blast, lots of neat swirly effects on the eyes, Lord of positive emotions. Just set aside the next day to recoup a little.

You ever stay up so late you get loopy, maybe even giggly? Can’t think straight because you’re tired? It’s about that level. It feels different and more fun, but it’s about comparable to the level of loss of control and mental capabilities.

I don’t think off topic is very subjective that often, and if you’re not sure just don’t vote. I gave an example of off topic behavior and, you know, it was too help you out. So you wouldn’t feel so bad about down voting. And then you tried to bicker with me about the details.

You’re supposed to downvote. If something is off topic especially, but also if something is toxic or against the rules.

If there was a community where the joke was “you can only reply PANTS” and then someone started to comment about the downfall of capitalism, you downvote that shit into oblivion even if you agree with it out of context.
