For all it’s (many) flaws, I enjoyed it overall, didn’t think it needed a second season though so no big loss IMO.

The problem is that the US government is not willing to enforce this at all, because it is owned by the same billionaires as the AI companies.

That’d be an uphill battle, even prominent OSS projects would fight against that unfortunately.

If the output of an LLM would found to be derivative of the input, that’d cause lots of problems for (e.g.) Linux, they love claude and have been funneling its output into the kernel for a while now, they’d rather not think about the licensing situation there.

And my major takeaway, beside the point they’re trying to make, is that the California law has taken the asinine step of redefining the word “user”.

They don’t, they’re just providing a definition of the term for that specific bit of law.

As an example, this bill, it defines a relative to be “an adult who is related to the child by blood”, doesn’t mean that suddenly people under 18 are no longer considered relatives, just that for this one specific part it doesn’t apply to them.

Yeah, I bet it’s something to do with a video decoder trying to decode empty data (dropped or corrupted frame, etc.), and the result of that being converted from YCbCr to RGB, it’s too consistent of a failure case.

That’s old school hardware overlays, haven’t really been a thing since XP era Windows.

These days everything is a scene graph with normal texture buffers, and the compositor is responsible for either layering stuff over it or doing direct scanout of that surface.

One estimate I can see of the total cumulative human population is about 100 billion people, if there was just a 1% chance of becoming a ghost when you die there should still be about a billion of them on Earth currently.

Imagine if 1 in 9 people on Earth was actually a ghost.

They’ve released at least one screenshot, but since they mostly use it for internal testing, and they very rarely ever release those builds, there’s not much to go on.

So builds they didn’t intend to release provide the best insight.

Now I’ve only ever used the English releases, but I know before Vista that this simply wasn’t a thing. Each language release was a separate build, handled separately by different teams. So there was never a mixing of languages or loading strings at runtime, they were hardcoded into the binaries that shipped on disk.

It depends on the type of input validation you’re doing, a bunch of it is built into the browser and you don’t need JS for it.

I switched a year ago, after trying and failing multiple times over the years whenever I gave it a try.

1. Linux has massively improved, systemd is a lot cleaner than the mess of disparate shell scripts it displaced. Network Manager is also a lot nicer now than I remember it being when it was first introduced into Red Hat.
2. Windows hasn’t, in a lot of ways it was actually regressing. I used to get multiple shell crashes a week with no insight as to why, friends would claim it was just me but then receive an update and start having similar crashes. Also noticeable UI issues that went unfixed for multiple revisions, made it felt cheap.
3. MS went all in on AI garbage and was jamming it into everything, kept getting popup notifications and the like to try Copilot, notifications went from being useful to just being an ad delivery mechanism.
4. Gaming on Linux massively improved, last time I tried it OpenGL support was a mess. Now OpenGL is very mature, and all the D3D translation stuff uses Vulkan which has been rock solid for me. I’ve found games run better than they did on Windows on the same hardware, and the only game I’ve had an issue with was Destiny 2, which is intentional on the devs behalf (Luckily the game’s boring now)

I find I’m a lot more willing to let issues slide though, like I’ve had some Thunar crashes which I’m cool with since there’s like 4 devs maintaining it, vs. the multi-billion dollar company working on Explorer which I expect better from. Also unsurprisingly the only actual shop-stopper issue I’ve had was with a memory leak in the Nvidia drivers, the actual FLOSS stuff has been great.

If you’re doing hashing and salting on the client then yep it’s useless, no difference to just using a hash output as a password.

If on the other hand you’re doing a zero-knowledge password proof method then it’s quite secure. As the password is never transmitted over the network, not even the server knows what it is, but can still verify the user has the correct one.

Which replaced Google Play Music, which was actually good.
