Probably the only reason I found it is the busted display 😅. I guess to someone that either meant it didn’t work at all, or they just stopped caring and didn’t want to deal with it anymore.
Maybe one day I’ll find a matching macbook pro where the computer doesn’t work but the display does. And then I’ll mix-and-match them and have one fully working laptop and one fully broken one 😀
It was in an e-waste bin. I didn’t purchase it. I just picked it out of a pile of electronics.
It seems what happens is the laptop still expects a built-in display to output to unless the magnets/hinges are closed, in which case it will switch to clamshell mode and only display on the external monitor.
but what sucks about that is in clamshell mode the built in keyboard/mouse become unusable, but those components are fully functional. Maybe there is a way to trick it to only output to an external display, never try to output to the broken laptop screen, and keep the kb+mouse operational…

My one fear is if I try to install Asahi but get stuck on an install step that requires me to be able see what’s on the main laptop display, which would not be possible

Since you said non-technical I definitely recommend Python. It is easy to install and easy to get going with. It is feature ful. It is generous. You can do really interesting things without sweating details like pointers and segfaults.

Signal is good so far. Firefox is teetering on the edge, but it’s also good so far (poor little fox). Lemmy and Mastodon are both great, but maybe that’s EZ mode because they’re built as alternatives to proprietary social media sites.
I pay for ArsTechnica and I feel that I get a lot of value out of doing so. And keep in mind, being a paying subscriber of a service does not safeguard the service from enshittification, so that’s quite great
I recently bought a replacement PC for my dad because of windows 11 (though his old computer was also over 10 years old so it was a somewhat fair upgrade, anyhow). Someone suggested I use Ninite to quickly bootstrap a lot of the programs he’d use and I was honestly surprised. It was genuinely no-nonsense and got the job done. A rare nice thing in Windows…

Among those limitless git guis I started trying out sourcegit and it seems pretty good. To date magit is the only other one I’ve tried, and it’s also really good.
That’s slick in how straightforward it is. I like the offline element you get from printing it, too.
For both our sakes, I hope we can find something that works for us. I don’t need to be on my productivity grind 24/7. I don’t desire that at all. But I really don’t like the feeling of completely misspent time. I want the balance of doing what I want to do AND totally relaxing (physically+mentally) when I feel it’s time to relax

When I was in unspecified foreign country I went to a graveyard with my family. It was very different in that the bodies were buried basically right next to each other and you basically just walk over the bodies of the interred to get to where you want to go.
It was a bit distinct from how we do it in America where, much like our suburban houses, you have to have a pointless giant green lawn surrounding where the body is buried.
Yeah, that’s my sentiment as well. I don’t want to pay to have the display repaired, because I already have a laptop. Finding this thing was not an invitation for me to spend money on it :P
So I hooked it up to a spare monitor and fiddled around with it, some. Used Crossover to install Steam and Mortal Kombat and played a few rounds. Worked well!
