Obviously random is better, but uniqueness of passwords is IMO even more important. They are effectively spreading around their master password

There’s literally only 4 characters difference between all their passwords, even if those would be completely random, that’s very bad.
They don’t seem to understand that it’s not about how many samples you need to see to be sure what their Amazon password is. The problem is that if one of their passwords ever leaks, some bot can brute-force try thousands of variations on it and find any other password very quickly (they effectively only have to guess 4 characters, plus a bit to find that it’s the first 4 to change).
How can anyone think this is more secure than having completely different and long passwords for every site?
They probably don’t understand that your pw manager’s password is safer because you don’t enter it anywhere, only into your password manager (ideally with 2FA). This person is effectively spreading their master password around by putting it as the core of ALL their passwords, significantly increasing the risk that it leaks.

If you want to run other services beside HA and Add-Ons, you should be comfortable picking your own orchestration method and hardware.

But yeah thanks for asking the right questions: I should split tunnel so the music app can go around the VPN obviously!

That, in combination with an offsite backup of some kind (such as the Google Drive backup) is a great strategy

10·1 year ago- Motion sensors. The mmWave are very sensitive but also expensive. Nice for rooms where you sit still or lie down for longer periods, such as an office or bed room. PIR sensors are the cheap ones, very useful for hallways, stairs, kitchen and toilets.
- Some smart plugs measure current. Innr has a nice zigbee smart plug with a physical button and monitoring for around €20.
FYI If you have a Zigbee bridge, you can just connect most zigbee devices to it and you are not tied to the app or devices of the bridge’s brand.

ADHD@lemmy.world•how to create the circumstances to think and make decisionsEnglish
4·2 years agoAt its core, my problem is that I tend to get angry and frustrated with myself, instead of being kind to myself. Self-kindness is easier said than done.
Pomodoro is just a structure that helps me to be kind to myself. Feel free to adapt it to your own needs, as long as it helps you to be kind to yourself and “reset” from distractions.

ADHD@lemmy.world•how to create the circumstances to think and make decisionsEnglish
13·2 years agoThe Pomodoro method works for me. Set a timer for 25 minutes. Decide the task (or task list) you’re going to do. Make it as specific as possible, for example “write 10 ideas of things to do at work next year and rate them by how desirable and achievable they are”. Then start the timer and do the task. When the timer goes off, you have to take a 5 minute break. Whether you’ve been productove or distracted, doesn’t matter. You HAVE to take a break. Drink something, go to the toilet, reply to a message whatever. Timer goes off after 5 minutes of break time. You’ve got a fresh start to try again.
For me, the first pomodoro is often wasted, sometimes even the first 2, but the forced break (I only have 25 minutes to a “deadline”) and mental reset afterwards help to create that setting to be productive.
Thank you for sharing your findings and the great explanation! I recognize number 2 a lot… I will try to stop engaging with the anxiety.
If you’re worried, you can come up with a plan B now. It tends to be easier to think “what if …?” before anything has happened and then write that in the reminder than to do this kind of thinking when you’re in panic mode and find out that things aren’t going well.
As much as is reasonable, try to expect them. Put a task in 2 weeks describing what to do if there have been no replies yet. Expand your range of options. Search farther, find a different kind of handiman companies to mail, find someone who can give feedback on your resume, or if necessary, consider different kinds of jobs.
I would not be a part of this community if this mind of planning always went well in my life. But in general, planning these kinds of things in advance so I don’t have to:
- notice them in the moment
- make the plan in the moment
Helps me. Do the work now so you can simply follow reminders and instructions for plan B.
I feel you. What helps me, is to organize before starting (as much as I dread organizing). Write down what needs to be done when, and make sure you have at least a reminder to kickstart plan B scheduled.
I extensively use to-do lists (love the Todoist app) and will put in tasks like (for a home improvement example)
- mail at least 5 companies asking to do X (tomorrow)
- in 2 weeks: make sure you have followed up with 1 of them, else read 2 tutorials and get tools to do X myself
For the boring (but non-waiting) tasks like making the schedule, reading or just doing boring stuff at work, I like to use pomodoro: Set a timer, try to do focused work for 25 minutes. When the timer goes off, you HAVE TO take a break and enjoy yourself for 5 minutes (set a timer again), whether you got any work done or not. Repeat. There’s apps and sites that help make this smooth.
Usually the first pomodoro is wasted but in the second or third, I get so much work done, and feel better because of the mandatory breaks, that it is usually worth it
